Te Kahui Rere - The Flock

TORO PIKOPIKO PUPPETS  2016 NEWSLETTER
Kia ora e te whanau whānui.

Toro Pikopiko Puppets are now taking terms 1 & 2 bookings for our marvelous musical Mighty Māui’. This 60-minute interactive show, with more than seventy ‘Flatso’ puppets, weaves together the daring deeds of our own Super Hero Māui Tikitiki, including slowing down the sun and fishing up the North Island. ‘Mighty Māui’ has had one hundred and fifty pre and primary school performances during 2015. In addition, we have enjoyed public shows at the Globe Theatre in Palmerston North, X-space Theatre in Tauranga, the Howard Morrison Centre in Rotorua and Te Ahu Centre in Kaitaia.
We have also made a music video about the birth of Māui, which features the first song and puppets from our theatrical show ‘Mighty Māui’. The video can be watched by clicking the following link:

We are currently researching and developing an exciting project in collaboration with Te Ana Rock Art Centre in Timaru. From term 3, 2016 on wards we will be touring a new production             Te Kāhui Rere/ The Flock,re-telling one of Ngai Tahu's oldest legends about Pourakahua the Birdman, whose overly long arms and legs make him a lonely outcast. He is transformed by Te-Manunui-a-Tāne, enabling him to fly to Aotearoa in search of his own bird tribe, following the whales and celestial path of Matariki.  Pourakahua and all the characters involved in this story have been depicted in ancient cave art found throughout Te Waipounamu. These iconic drawings are a potent source of inspiration for this puppet show. They will be brought to life from their cave rock origins and animated by Toro Pikopiko puppeteers with audience children playing the parts of stars, whales, forest birds, lizards & hunters who Pourakahua meets on his journey.
Te Kāhui Rere/ The Flock is a unique, immersive ‘Flatso’ puppets production and will premiere at the Te Ana Centre. It will be toured nationally throughout terms 3 & 4, 2016, and terms 1 – 4 2017.  Priority is given to those educational communities that book early.
We will be performing different versions of both shows for pre-school and primary school children.
